10 Steps To Reach Financial Wellness

Financial wellness refers to effectively managing your economic life. This concept surrounds many factors such as spending within one’s means, being financially prepared for emergencies, having a concrete plan, and having access to tools necessary to make good money decisions.

Financial security is the underlying concept of financial wellness. To help you reach financial wellness, you may start by following these steps.

STEP 1: COMMIT TO CHANGE

The first step in developing a financial plan is to determine your attitudes and beliefs about money. Be honest with yourself. Are you ready to accept the responsibility of improving your financial situation? Do you believe that you can change the way you behave towards money?

STEP 2: EXAMINE YOUR FINANCES

Examine your finances by looking at your previous statements and tracking your spending. This will give you an overview of how you are doing financially. Identify your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to managing your money. Write down your findings and feelings.

STEP 3: SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

Choose a trusted person to conduct the day-to-day financial tasks to stay on top of things. The appointed person must be a good communicator and an organized individual. Give him or her uninterrupted time to do financial tasks effectively.

STEP 4: GET COPIES OF YOUR CREDIT REPORTS

A credit report is a compilation of your credit payment history collected across all your banks. It includes valuable information such as basic personal profile, closed credit accounts, aggregated credit limits, and aggregated outstanding balances. Credit reports provide a snapshot of your overall situation.

For licensed moneylenders, the Moneylenders Credit Bureau is the central repository of data on borrowers’ loans and repayment records. For banks and finance companies, only two credit bureaus are allowed to obtain such information in Singapore. These are Credit Bureau Singapore and Experian Credit Bureau Singapore.

Credit reports are issued by a credit bureau to banks and finance companies when they make inquiries about the client. These companies assess your creditworthiness by looking at the credit score. You can also request a copy of your report from the bureaus. Reviewing your credit reports can help you identify errors or fraudulent activities.

STEP 5: KNOW YOUR STARTING POINT

Know your starting point by calculating your net worth. Compare what you owe (liabilities) with what you own (assets). Do seek professional help when necessary.

STEP 6: IDENTIFY YOUR INCOME

To have an accurate picture of what you can earn in the future, you can observe your previous income. Decide whether you are going to expand your income by using different streams or if you are going to stick with your current income source.

STEP 7: REVIEW YOUR DEBTS

Freedom from debt is an achievable goal. The first step to regaining control is to take a transparent look at your existing obligations. Regardless of which financial method you use, be patient and persistent when paying your debts.

STEP 8: SET YOUR PRIORITIES

Create a list of your needs and wants to help you establish your financial priorities. Financial priorities may include saving three months’ worth of expenses or saving S$3,000 for a year to fund your family vacation.

STEP 9: HAVE SMART FINANCIAL GOALS

By setting your financial goals, you are providing yourself with something to aim for. Simply remember that financial goals need to be SMART.

STEP 10: SECURE YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Look at your retirement plan and make some necessary changes. Do not despair if you are behind on your retirement goals. You are not alone! Studies show that many households are not prepared for retirement. Fortunately for you, you can improve your situation.

Benefits of Having A Financial Planner

Financial planning goes beyond the calculated investments. Building a financial plan helps you visualize the “big picture” and set financial goals (i.e., both long-term and short-term). This is a crucial step in mapping out your financial future. And, a financial planner or financial advisor may just help you with that!

BENEFIT #1: ENUMERATING ONE’S FINANCIAL GOALS

The first step that financial planners partake in is the identification of the client’s financial goals. For couples, this activity is enough to get the two individuals on the same page. It highlights their similarities and differences. The funny thing is that many Singaporeans spend more time planning their travels than planning for their financial goals (e.g., retirement fund).

BENEFIT #2: DETERMINING WHETHER YOUR GOALS ARE SMART

After listing down your financial goals, the financial planner visualizes how you can get there. How much do you need to save S$10,000 a year? Should you invest your income in mutual funds? A cost-benefit analysis will be done. This act will put each of your goals in a microscope to see whether they are SMART! SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound. The financial planner must ensure that both your goals and your timeline are attainable.

BENEFIT #3: HAVING PEACE OF MIND

Certified financial planners have years of education, training, and experience working with different clients of diverse situations. Their broad professional background aids in assessing your needs. They are qualified to give you advice that reflects the best practices of the financial industry. Simply put, having a financial planner gives a sense of peace when it comes to knowing that you have an in-depth financial strategy in place.

BENEFIT #4: HIGHLIGHTING THE MONEY MISTAKES YOU MAKE

Analyzing your holistic financial picture exposes the mistakes that you are currently making.

For instance, you disregard some of your credit card debts. This leads to paying a significant amount of money for penalty fees. Said mistake will be highlighted to ensure that you can apply an efficient fix.

Robo-Advisors: The New Wave Of Wealth Managers

Wealth Management Services used to be exclusive to the people who are insanely rich. These people were expected to pay at least 1% of the value of their assets as fees. Many wealth managers charge more than this! This is why these services leave no room for small-time investors.

Traditional wealth managers provide tailorized advice on financial matters such as investments, retirement, taxes, and estate planning. You must keep up with your annual fees to reap these benefits. However, a new wave just hit the country! Several FinTech (i.e., Financial Technology) companies have digitalized wealth management services.

These digitalized wealth managament services make use of “robo-advisors”, which allow all sorts of clients to build a portfolio at a cheaper rate. Robo-advisors measure your risk appetite and diversify accordingly. The gradual growth of robo-advisors is seen around the globe.

Know more about robo-advisors by watching this short video:

The local FinTech companies that I mentioned above include Bambu and Smartly. Let me kick off with Bambu. Bambu chose the B2B (i.e., Business to Business) route in marketing their robo-advisory platform. This means that they offer their services to the financial institutions themselves.

Ned Philips, the brainchild and CEO of Bambu, believes that the quick rise of digital adaption will greatly benefit the consumers. He explained that it may cost his company US$1 million (S$1.45 million approximately) to acquire 3,000 customers. The low fees that robo-advisors charge make it possible for him to sustain the business.

Smartly, on the other hand, allows its clients to invest in internationally diversified portfolios. The company offers ETFs or Exchange-Traded Funds. You can invest for as low as S$50 per month. You read that right! Their fees are very affordable!

Clients or investors are mandated to provide basic information about themselves. Then, Smartly’s proprietary algorithms will suggest a personalized portfolio based on the profile. It is possible to change the allocations of the funds if the client does not agree with it. Its mere slogan will say it all: “Anyone can be an investor – an investment service built for you.”

In summary, robo-advisors allow you to create a portfolio on autopilot. The digital algorithms access your tolerance to risks and your preferred timeline. Afterwards, a portfolio will be built. It is undeniably cheaper than the traditional wealth management services. This is why it welcomes more and more small-time investors to open their accounts.
